Article Analysis

In the article “Courage: Making Teamwork Work Well”, published by the journal of Group and Organization Management, Benjamin Amos and Richard J. Klimoski describes the importance of having a courageous leader in any particular situations. In this article, the authors did not conduct any research or survey about the topic and there was no graphical representation of any data. It can be assumed that there are not many previous writers who wrote about this topic. Moreover, there was no graphical representation because there is no actual research or survey that has been conducted by the authors. This article may be relevant for any top managerial level so as to give confidence to the employees and make them realize the importance of courage. Furthermore, by giving confidence to the staffs, the result achieved can be really affective. The purpose of article analysis is to report its main ideas, claims, positions or findings and the reasoning that supports these ideas for better understanding of the article. This paper helps me understand the importance of arrangement, organization of the paper. It is crucial to write general academic writings including my discipline.

In business, the most successful people are the ones who simply make it happen regardless of the obstacles in the way. In addition, this article aims to promote a greater appreciation for the concept of courage as a leader in situations of risk. This helps to fill a significant gap in the team by providing greater understanding to act with courage in any risky situations. As a result, the business organization will develop the ability to work more efficiently.

Another important aspect of this article is that the authors talked about the significance of duties and responsibilities. Duty stimulates motivations to lead or perform with courage in any given situations. The authors claim that it is vital to have courage in order to succeed, however there are certain kind of risks involved. Courage, moreover, leads to valuable insight and suggest a structure of three qualities: character, confidence and credibility. Finally, courage in a teamwork often leads to practical implications and virtue in team composition.

This article, does not use the IMRD structure, i.e. introduction, methods, results and discussions. However, the structure of this article is literature review. The reasons behind using literature review is that it shows that the authors have the knowledge about this particular field and discipline. Moreover, this article uses APA style of citation, direct quotations and in-text citations.  Another thing about this article is that the authors paraphrase material so as to give credit to the previous researchers and to help convey the idea in source material to the readers. Appealing part about this article is that Amos and Klimoski gave eight propositions about the importance of courage. The purpose of these propositions is to tell the readers about the key benefits of courage and important part of this process is having in depth knowledge about the topic.

The article focuses on literature that has identified acting under risk as an important leadership behavior but there has been a little research on the existing study that would have helped understand the tendency to act under risky circumstances. The negative thing about this article is that they didn’t conduct any research, which might have shown some actual data from the employees and see if courage really plays an important role in developing confidence. Considering the fact that there has been enough research about this topic, conducting a research takes time and effort to get the results. And moreover, there are always some limitations to any research because it is really difficult to collect all of the data and it might be challenging to explore all the possible information. And also, the information was not overloaded so, it may be easier for the reader to understand the concise evidence and facts. Alternatively, Amos and Klimoski stated that “people admire guts and courage”. In other words, we need to have what to takes to achieve something that we really want and desire and to do something that most people have thought was never possible.

Another key component of this article is that, it is applicable for my discipline, management, as it courage and teamwork results in better performance. This article provides the road map for the problems that we might need to address in my discipline. In the last part of the article, the authors provide information about the abilities of an employees to cope with some of the difficulties which was certainly motivating. According to Amos and Klimoski (2014), “The virtue of courage has been lauded across time and over a diverse range of societies”. From past to present courage has been essential tool across many cultures in the society. And most importantly, courage is the key to leadership.
